They're flat and monotonous. The firebolt looks like something from a noir book cover.

Please try to study depictions of elemental bolts/projectiles.

Well, everyone starts from something. If you want get these approved follow the next instruction:
1. Add colors. Reddish can be balanced with yellow, orange and white to get more fireish. Icy - light blue, seal, white, etc. Water - more greenish, sealish colors.
2. Work with shape - add sparks, lines, bubbles, dots, cut pieces to make your bolts more flexible and chaotic.
3. Work in big size - never make your icons in 64x64 size. start at least with 600x600 and only when the finish touch is done resize them to smaller size. That is how great icons are done.

The Fireball's had some improvement, although it's still monotone. I suggest you add more contrast by drawing shadows with low-opacity brushes, and having bolder lights. It also wouldn't hurt to add in more yellow.

It's a step in the right direction.
