This is probably a dumb question, but I can't seem to find the answer

I have this model, and I want to add a simple skin for a potion, but I have no idea how

If somebody could show me how, possibly skinning it for me and sending it back (if that is too much then don't)

I am using 3ds max, and I have Photoshop for the skin, the only problem is I simply don't know how to stick the skin on the model

Here is the model, I have no idea how to take a screen shot

*bump*

I apologize for this, as it seems to me as really dumb

But I am stumped on this, I finally understand how you import skins into your game (Get the normal blp path for the unit, and change the custom path, simple enough)

I just don't see anything on putting a custom skin on a custom model

I may just not be trying hard enough, I often have very little time for use on the computer, I will continue reading and learning

I realy wish my flashdrive didn't break, I use that to relay between computers (one comps internet is screwed, the other I do not own and can get on in small increments, never enough time to get a big project done)

id say one way is to make the model into .mdl and open the .mdl into notepad and you scroll down until you see Textures\white.blp Change the white to whatever your filename of your skin is and keep texture or delete it or add whatever you want there lol just make sure you convert the skin aswell to .blp

then when you finish changing it save the model, when you click save as it should say save as type: Text documents, change that to all files and double click your .mdl, then convert the model to .mdx and import, and if you need help with it more just pm me

Oh ok, I will try it, atm my flashdrive is screwed up, (photoshop on one comp, 3ds max on the other) so I will try it out later, and probably give +rep for the help

Thank you

well you must unwrap your model in order to skin it in 3d max. then use something like texporter plugin to export the skin from 3d max and skin it in photo shop. then open the mdl and change the texture path to the custom skin.

if you need help, try exporting it to mdx with dex script and ill see what i can do with it in 3dmax 5.

Ohhh, yeah I hadn't tried the other method yet, but I was thinking about it, and it didn't seem to make sense (just changing the path didn't wrap the skin around the model, how could the computer know which piece goes where?)

Ok, I will try that method, I really wish I had my flashdrive, I wanna try it now ><

oh i thought you already had the model and skin finished and wrapped and you wanted them both together so they'd work for wc3 cuz i believe you must change the path no matter what modeling program (could be wrong since i use ms3d and have never tried 3dsmax)

well in 3d max 5 you apply ur painted texture to your model then export it using art tools. when you open the model in notepad the path to the textures are there but they are sometimes wrong. so you still have to change the name to Textures\whaterver.blp.

he has a different 3d max version so he must use the dex script. and will have to edit the paths in mdl as well.

I don't know about you, but when I exported models using Art Tools it ALWAYS ruined the file if it had a texture.
What I did to solve this was to give the texture, create the UVW, remove the texture, export, and put the texture with Magos.

And I'm not talking about "the path wasn't right", it simply ruined the file, making it empty.

that has never happend to me... perhaps you have a bad install? because in max you should always be able to apply a texture and export it, its exactly the way blizzard did it. so i would assume either art tools installation is corrupt or your max 5.

try reinstalling your art tools.
