Area transistion cache and custom stuff.

Foillowing the thread of this guide, I have a question about transistioning. I got the gist of transistioning from, say, Map 1 to Map 2 and back, but what exactly gets saved for the next level? Is it everything, meaning all the stuff I may have imported or edited with the Object Editor? Or is it simply the Hero unit stats? What about quests, other triggers beyond the transistioning triggers and stuff like that?
