how can you get a computer controlled unit to spam a spell as soon as a potential target gets within range? id prefer to not trigger it since i plan to use a lot of the spamming units. and if i have to use a base spell it should be something close to the tinker spell(forget what its called but its a bombardment AoE)

Without triggers, your screwed.
With triggers, to do this you have to check every unit and then check every potential target for that unit. Then order the unit to cast the spell. Its pretty inefficient, but if your careful you can make it work without lag. I have it in one of my old (very old) maps and it worked fine even it semi-large battles.

that seems way too complicated to make a complex targeting trigger for about 100+ units, plus the fact that they will be spamming the trigger, are there any other ways to do this?

Will, theres a way thats a bit more efficient. If you make an autocast spell that uses the same type of targets as the spell you want dummied, you can detect whenever the unit begins casting that spell and then order them to cast the spell at/on the target of the dummy spell.
