When I connect to my wireles it says 54mbps, but then it drops to 1mbps after a few seconds, so I cant play anything without lag.

I've seen it randomly jumping to 54mbps, but no hope, becuz then it just drops back to 1mbps soon..

Generally, such drops in performance are due to bad signal strength and/or interference, and less often due to hardware issues.

How far are you from the the wireless access point? Are there any walls in the way?
Are there any cordless phones in the house? Are there any other wireless networks nearby that might be using the same channel?

Its a new modem, that we bought a few days ago and it worked fine until now. Connection is stated as "excellent" or "good" (4-5) and I've checked the channels, my channel is 6 and there are no other things using it.

EDIT
I changed modem position and the facing angle of antenna and now its 24mbps-36mbps at the moment. Signal is 2-4. Dunno if it would stay on this.

You might try using a different channel, just for the fun of it. Unless you've done a proximity scan and found no one else, there might be another wireless network close by that is using the same channel.

Also, make sure your internet connection is that rate. As you could be looking at the LAN connection speed and not internet speed.

My internet is only 3-4 odd mbps and usually at 1 odd mbps during the day due to over selling and it plays games online fine. On average during the night it maxes at 400 Kb/sec which is kilobytes per second.
My lan network on the other hand is 100mbps yet that still means my max net speed is 3-4 odd mbps.

Thus unless you are using cable or have a good provider, I honestly dought you will connect to the internet at that transfer rate.
