I actually wrote a post regarding this in a discussion on this website, but I believe @Kyrbi0 needs to add you to the conversation for you to be able to see it.
Well if you're looking for my personal secret, it would be the medium I use. Since there's no full drawings of the original icons to reference heavily from, I find it easier to work in the 56x56 scale and with my pixel art experience I have a lot of control and it allows me to pull off the style I'm referencing..
This probably helps even less than my post in that discussion, with which I was taking other medium in consideration, but hopefully the discussion over there continues and someone's able to provide you with some more useful tips.
