I used to play A LOT with the shareware version as a kid, but I don't remember if the sound editor was part of it!
All I can remember is that you could use the map editor but not save maps and only snow terrain could be used :p
There's the demo version here <link removed, not sure about legality!>
But even if sound editor is included, I reckon there will only be sounds of available units in the demo, so something like Peasants - Footmen - Archers - Ships, and that's all

Regarding Abandonware France: I already know that the site owners do have ethics, and that they will remove any infringing files by themselves. Like for example when the games get sold again by GOG.com. But they are still more than borderline imho for THW...

There is also archive.org (see their software library, and also their games 'preservation' projects). But their methods and arguments are also very dubious imho...
