Well here they did catch us unprapred. Some of the warriors were outside the gate, patrolling, checking supply deliveries, repair the wall from the outside. The gates were open too ... Otherwise - you are right.

That confused me as well. Demons cant command elementals. Known fact.

Lava elementals can only controlled by elemental lords and Old Gods.
