Wands were previously based on the player's current facing angle, which made aiming incredibly difficult. As of patch 1.02 wands should be much easier to use.
Seems a bit uninspired, first basically shoots one projectile, the second two but diagonally and the third three, basically a combination of the first two but maybe faster.
Never judge a book by its cover! Aside from damage and missile speed differences, there's also a heavy focus on items and their effects on certain abilities.
Say item A increases the fire wand by two additional projectiles, it also resonates with ice wands by decreasing the number of projectiles by one, making it a single straight shot, but with a lot more damage. This in turn can be combined with item B which affects missile speed, or summons units based on the number of projectiles (if stat requirements are met)
