Hey, sorry for the bother. Seeing your awesome JRPG-like textures and especially doodad packs got me wondering...
Would there be a possibility to instead of making tile textures to have tile doodads/destructibles (basically models) that would blend in nicely? I know one that does: Lava There's also a small water one that I can't seem to find.
The idea is that the game has tile number limitations but also a doodad number restriction so that could potentially be circumvented by making transition maps which means extra painful coding. So, I guess an even neater approach would be to use these tile models as locust units but then I'm not sure how nicely they'll blend. Perhaps, with the proper modelling experience and tweaking they could.
