World Editor Gem

[Spellbound]

I have been eiting a map recently and found out a small button cornered by the two scroll bars. It was green. When i pressed it, at the bottom left of the viewing screen, the message 'Gem Activated' appeared and the botton turned purple. When i pushed the botton again, it turned back to green and read 'Gem Deactivate'. Can someone please tell me what it that 'Gem' button and what it does?

The only apparent use I've found for it is that it makes units play there death animation when you delete them, they will also make sounds when you select them.
