Just curious because I haven't found any comprehensive answers.

Is there a maximum map size for Custom Maps? Or a limit that once it's reached the map is no longer playable or able to open at all? Is there still a limit to the point it's not possible to LAN in it?

IIRC, the older versions of legacy builds for Warcraft III can only play maps with 4 or 8 MB of its file size.

Starting from 1.27b, the file size limit was officially raised by Blizzard from 8 MB to 128 MB. Latest version of the game (I think) has its file size limit being raised up to 512 MB.

There are so many tricks you can use to bypass this limit, but you can use this tool. It allows you to play >100MB maps with 1.26-1.28.5 versions of Warcraft III, but I can't guarantee if this trick still works today.

For individual maps I don't know, but some campaigns are above 500 MB with all the custom models and music... they tend to crash when reloading after you've played for a while, or sometimes when launching another map, but otherwise they work just as well as any small one. (on 1.27 for me, but videos on Youtube seem to be the same on later versions)
