Using one vanilla models weapon on another?

Hey guys, currently trying to put a rifleman's rifle in the hands of a peasant but attaching the model file just makes the rifleman hang out above the peasants shoulder instead of using his weapon, does anyone know how to fix this? I'm no good with model editing
