Two Reskins needed - added team color

Hello there,
I am in the need of having two skins changed to support team color. The models can be found at these links here.

I would actually perfer someone to explain to me how to do it myself, in a manner that makes sense. I have been trying to figure out how to do this myself but I can't figure out the alpha channel. I just can't seem to find a strong tutorial for team color, and forgive me if it's something that might be easy for others, because it's not for me. I am using GIMP, and I either just change the color of the part I want to be team color (general I turn it solid back because tutorials say that what is black on the alpha is team color- which I can't get to work), or I either erase that area of the skin making it disappear on the model. Direct, solid, advice will be greatly appreciated.
