Tier 2 builders idea

I'm hoping Reforged turns out well and thinking about it has me uncharacteristically hopeful. I'm probably going to get back into mapmaking and trying to make a campaign. Got some more campaign mechanic ideas I wanted to share. (This is all for humans as my campaign ideas are all human/alliance campaigns.)

I was thinking about the idea of tier 2 builders which sort of function as a pathway into further techtrees/units like tier 2 does in Starcraft.

Currently, the loose idea I have in my mind is of Arcane Engineers or something who can repair and build, but who cannot harvest gold from gold mines or wood from lumber mills. However, they can work at buildings they build. (I was thinking to make some kind of limit though so that it isn't over powered.)

For example, they can build an observatory and the more Arcane Engineers working at it (up to 5) would increase how far it can see. I am picturing a remodelled undead gold mine if you get what I mean.

Another idea I had was for some kind of arcane building which generates 5+ gold/wood so they can have a building to work at while idle. This is the building I was thinking of having limited to 1 so that it isn't like cheating for resources, but still a pretty good boost.

I was also thinking that these buildings could have certain other restrictions like maybe they can only be built on some type of place of power like a "concentration of ley lines" or something, so you have to choose whether you want to build an observatory on it or something else.

I have only thought of the arcane observatory and the magic mine so far, but I feel like there is potential for more. So far my ideas were more on the magic side of Arcane Engineer, but I am sure some steampunk stuff could work too. Maybe the Arcane Engineer could be a gnome. Has anyone ever actually made any gnome models in WC3?

Thoughts?

What you could do is give the "peon" classification to special worker units, and have them occupy a structure up to a max of 4 or 5, the more peons the more gold is generated, or the more peons the faster of gold generated. Just my thoughts on this

That's a great idea, thank you.

I like it. They could be dwarves and their idle building could be some kind of dwarf bunker/workshop.
