You should be able to set a custom thread image, instead of it automatically picking your profile picture.

This will allow threads to promote their content, not just with their title, but also with an relevant picture.

Ah interesting. Kinda like wc3campaigns.net does it in their resource sections. I like the idea. The simplest implementation would be to programmatically look in the first post for attachments and take the one that comes alphabetically first and display it instead of the avatar. How does that sound?

This means you can attach a file, call it "0_mymap_rocks.png" and that way make sure its displayed outside in the thread list.
