Used to facilitate one of the steps for AES (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Encryption_Standard#The_MixColumns_step) encryption. Its the step that gives it the unique security that gave it victory over ciphers such as IBM's Lucifer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucifer_(cipher))), iirc.

In other words, its 99% useless. The 1% being AES.
