do u have war3model edit? if so continue:
Open up your model in war3model edit
Go to NODE MANAGER.
right click in the window and CREATE A NEW EVENT OBJECT
double click on your new event object. it should have a camera icon and its name should be UNNAMED
On the FIRST drop down box, select footprint
In the SECOND drop down box, select the kind of foot print you want to add.
Not quite sure what the identifier does.
And set global sequence to none.
ALright, youll notice a giant white box in the window above all the the drop downs. (this is the complicated part)
While still having that window open, open up the SEQUENCE MANAGER
Click on whatever animation you want the tracks/footprints to appear in.
Write down the INTERVAL FROM/INTERVAL TO numbers
Now, go back to your event object, and right click on the big box, and CREATE NEW.
Enter a number between the Interval From and Interval To numbers. You probably will have to create multiple sets of numbers to create a nice smooth effect.

After youve done that, go to the node manager, right click on your event object, and sleect EDIT NODE
This will pop up another window, that has a Pivot Point area. This is from where your footprints/tracks will appear. Enter your pivot point coordinates, and ur done

NOTES: unless ur dude is onelegged/one wheeled, youll need to repeat the process for the other leg/wheels.
I recommend you check out the Evil Illidan or any other big creature that creates footprints ingame for help with footprints, and the Steamtank for help with tracks
If you have questions, ask.

edit: footprint/track event objects in wc3 models have the FPT suffix
