The following is a summary of all the events that surround the human campaign The Scourge of Lordaeron. The focus is not just on what is shown ingame, but in other media too including novels, comics, chronicles and World of Warcraft.

Noteworthy events before the Campaign:

  • Years before the war the Alliance splinters. Quel’thalas, Gilneas and Stromgarde pull out for varying reasons.

Potential Avenues for Expansion:

Chapter: 2x - Jaina's Meeting

This is currently a cutscene but it has a lot of potential to become an RPG mission, but why do it and what could it be about? The why is easy but there are several reasons why. Instead of going into great detail about why, I'll just use bullet points!
  • If she is playable without another hero present then it sets up her importance to the plot and to the player.
  • It gives the player time to learn to play the Archmage class without needing to juggle another class at the same time.
  • Dalaran has been of importance to the Warcraft storyline since the days of Warcraft 2, but it is especially important in the first two campaigns of WC3 and later on in WoW
  • Giving players a chance to explore Dalaran while it is safe and functional will make the missions to invade Dalaran carry a lot more weight
  • This can have teases to future important characters such as Modera or Rhonin, or merely include lots of lore tidbits that hint at the history of Warcraft such as Antonidas studying the Orc lethargy or about the Guardian of Tirisfal
If that has persuaded you, then I would suggest a semi-stealthy mission about sneaking through one of the magocratic schools and through hidden passageways to reach Antonidas and his mysterious guest. The intro would be brief and feature Jaina spotting the Prophet and being curious, or it would involve her getting summoned to meet with her tutor. Either way, she would work her way there, and once she arrived you would see the cinematic that we see in WC3R.

If you are worried about a lack of combat, then I think the lore shows that Dalaran may be a wondrous city but it has its fair share of problems with elementals and magocratic experiments. Those, and beating up some sentry golems, might provide enough battle experience for the player. Another possibility is to use the Archmage abilities as puzzle components (perhaps through one-off scrolls for those abilities she does not have).

Chapter: 7 - The Shores of Northrend

My suggestion here isn't to expand the mission, but to flesh out the dwarf faction found here. I recommend the following changes:
  • We know from the TFT mission "Into the Shadow Web Caverns" that Baelgun Flamebeard was Muradin's second-in-command and could work as leader of the Dwarf Expedition base.
  • "Into the Shadow Web Caverns" also had a dwarf axeman unit that was cut, I recommend restoring it as a footman replacement for the dwarfs
  • Consider reusing the Dwarf Racing Tank from the Azeroth Grand Prix as a special unit just for this mission in the base, perhaps even one that you cannot control but that protects it.
  • Consider speaking with the Chronicle of the Second War team about using their dwarf models to flesh out this faction.

Chapter: Epilogue - Victory in Lordaeron...

Looking at the lore, I feel there is room for an epilogue. We know that the Lich King orders his Scourge in Lordaeron to retreat following the "death" of Mal'Ganis, to give the illusion that Arthas won victory in Northrend and would be welcomed back with open arms. An epilogue at this point could show many things, such as:

  • Paladins (possibly Uther and his compatriots) fighting skeletons and zombies in Lordaeron before they all suddenly collapse, as if the magic has gone out of them
  • Necromancers and Acolytes hiding in the forests and mountains waiting to strike, brewing up a new batch of plague or casting sneaky spells
  • Jaina pouring over old tomes in Dalaran for information about Kalimdor
  • Villagers cheering as the Scourge are 'defeated'
  • Ships on the horizon bearing the crest of Lordaeron, with villagers (or cultists in disguise) declaring that Prince Arthas has returned
I feel this would help bridge the gap between the battle in Northrend and Arthas being welcomed home so happily by the population. Not only that, but it sets up the ruse, and prepares the player for the next stage of the story.

At some point, the Alterac mountains were invaded by gnolls and kobolds. The dwarf mountain king Murgen Hammerfall used his abilities to decimate the gnolls. [Warcraft 3 Game Manual]

Since the first two missions take place near Alterac mountains, do you believe I should include a small Kobold tribe in the second map (in place of some other pointless creep)?

Along the road to Strahnbrad, Arthas rallies men to fight for Lordaeron, as well as saving a boy called Timmy from the Gnolls (likely of the Mudsnouts Tribe). [CH1 - The Defense of Strahnbrad]

Are you sure about that name? I will include it if you do.

I think it would be a nice touch to add some kobolds in the Alterac maps as creeps, and the same with the Gnolls. I am about 90% sure they were Mudsnouts because they're one of the few named tribes that were active in and around Alterac.

Greetings!

I was wondering if you noticed - but Chronicle suggests that after Arthas returned to Lordaeron and murdered his father, there was almost one whole year of war between the Scourge and the Alliance, or at least several months, before the start of the actual campaign in the first mission. Do you agree with this interpretation?

Yeah, not sure where they got that from. The game makes it clear that the Scourge rip through Lordaeron swiftly, and even ingame there are mere days between missions. It seems highly unlikely there was a year of war. Should the campaign have taken longer than a few weeks? Yes, as the timeframe is quite laughable, but a year seems too long. Perhaps a year from killing Terenas to Arthas reaching Kalimdor makes more sense.

I guess I like the idea that there were at least a few months of conflict where the Alliance clashed in force against the Scourge prior to the first udnead mission.

Sorry, I might have given the wrong impression there. The first mission is set shortly after Terenas dies, I was saying that it's possible there is more time between the Undead campaign and the later campaigns due to needing to cross the Great Ocean. We know that Thrall's prologue happens about midway through the human campaign in timeline terms.

Does the first mission need to be so soon after the cinematic, though? It might even make more sense if some time passes, considering the Silver Hand needs to get its hands on the body of Terenas, get them cremated, placed in the urn, brought to Andorhal, etc.

Interesting! How do we know this?

I just got here and support the entirety of this idea enthusiastically :goblin_good_job:. These puzzle-solving activities give off a intellectual vibe and to me they suit the "Archmage stereotype" and Jaina in particular very well.

In fact, this could also be a good opportunity to introduce Kael'thas and those Dalaran Archmages who would later fight Arthas in the Undead Campaign 07 and 08. The foreshadowing would add much continuity to the universe.

Technically, I can see this being built off the template of Snowsong's little adventure at the start of Prologue Mission 04, with less angry murlocs, more friendly pedestrians, and a lot more glamorous decor, since you know, Dalaran being Dalaran.

Thank you! And yeah I agree, it would work wonderfully as foreshadowing for later events of both campaigns. It might be hard to introduce Kael'thas due to dialogue, but I imagine there are many ways that characters could be referenced or shown. It would require a fair amount of creativity, but I reckon it could be a fun little mission, much like Snowsongs adventure that you mentioned which was a surprise and a delight.
