  • Shadowtooth Clan dark trolls and Barkskin Tribe furbolgs are persuaded to join the battle and reinforce the front lines of Mount Hyjal [CH7 - Twilight of the Gods]
  • The Orcish base is defeated and the Horde retreat. The last line of defence is now the Night Elven base near the summit. [CH7 - Twilight of the Gods]
  • Azgalor separates Broll Bearmantle from his allies and the two fight. His weapon Spite smahes into the Idol of Remulos, corrupting it and Broll's bear form, also killing Broll's daughter Anessa. [Comic - Balancing the Scales]
  • Archimonde climbs Nordrassil with the intent of sapping it of its energies and devouring the Well of Eternity, but Furion uses the Horn of Cenarius to call ancient spirits of the forest to rise up and attack the demon lord. [CH7x Eternity's End]
  • The ancient spirits detonate and kill Archimonde. As he dies, so too do many of his demons including great leaders like Azgalar. [CH7x Eternity's End]
  • Nordrassil is badly burned by the event [CH7x Eternity's End]
  • Following Archimonde's death, the Great Alliance leads a counterattack against the remaining demons and Scourge. Arthas narrowly escapes the battle with his life, and flees back to the Eastern Kingdoms. [Book - Chronicles Vol. 3]
  • Ner'zhul grasps his moment and takes control of the Scourge from the Dreadlords.
Noteworthy events set at unspecified times during the Campaign:

  • Hakkar the Houndmaster leads his Felhounds into battle but is slain. His death was retconned during the War of the Ancients novels, but considering Wc3 is set before those books he could appear. [Novels - War of the Ancients Trilogy]
  • Shandris Feathermoon retreats to fortify Mount Hyjal while Tyrande is running around the forest waking up Druids.
  • At some point during the Third War Shandris starts referring to Jaina Proudmoore as "Battle sister". When this happened is unknown
  • At some point the Night Elves encourage the Chimeras of Nordrassil to fight against the Burning Legion. This is never seen in the campaign, but it is part of the lore [Warcraft 3 Manual]
  • Demon Hunters, outcasts of the Night Elves, come to the aid of their kin by using their dark powers to kill any demon or undead that they can find. Though powerful, they are clearly outnumbered and can only supplement the defense of Ashenvale. [Warcraft 3 Manual]
  • Druids of the Fang are woken and their entire totemic order fight at the Battle of Mount Hyjal. They suffer many losses, but after the Third War their order recruits from the tauren and they replenish much of their former strength. [RPG - Lands of Mystery]
Noteworthy events set after the Campaign:
  • Guardians from three dragonflights (Bronze, Green and Red) travel to Nordrassil to protect it from Demons and to help heal it (but not to restore Night Elven immortality) [RPG - Lands of Mystery]
  • Jaina Proudmoore leads the survivors of the Alliance to the far south to Dustwallow Marsh. Here she builds Theramore, to stand as a new home. She maintains civil relations with the Horde but old tensions do simmer. [WC3:TFT / WOW]
  • Following their victory at Mount Hyjal, the Horde heads south to the Barrens and fights a war against the Razormane Quillboar for control of the land Thrall calls Durotar. The battles are intense, but soon Thrall lays the foundations of their new capital city Orgrimmar. [WOW]
  • Some Tauren fight alongside the Orcs against the Quillboar but most return to Mulgore to begin establishing their own capital city of Thunderbluff. [WC3: TFT / WOW]
  • Amnennar the Coldbringer leads remnants of the Scourge from the Battle of Mount Hyjal to the Barrens, where he spends time creating the Abomination Tartek the Enraged. He unleashes it on the quillboar, killing well over a thousand before it succumbs to its wounds. [WOW]
  • At some point after the Third War ends, the remaining Darkspear Trolls led by Vol'jin arrive in Kalimdor and begin colonising the Echo Isles. Those survivors of the war join them, establishing several settlements including Sen'jin Village. [WC3:TFT / WOW]
  • Hamuul Runetotem speaks with Furion and requests to become his pupil. Furions takes the tauren up on his request, and when his training finishes he is the first known tauren druid in twenty generations. In time he attains the title of Archdruid [Comic - The Gathering / Book - Ultimate Visual Guide / Novel - Stormrage]
  • Furion calls upon the faerie dragons to wake from the Emerald Dream and help heal the lands. These sprite dancers work hard to heal the land but they have a monumental task ahead of them as the Legion's blight was extensive [WC3:TFT]
Notes and Inconsistencies:
  • Ever since the Demon Hunters were introduced in Warcraft 3 it has been known that they fought alongside against the Burning Legion in the Third War and that they, in fact, predate it by a long time. WoW: Legion attempted to retcon this by claiming the first Demon Hunters were trained by Illidan while on Outland, but this lore is contradicted even by the new characters added in that expansion, including a female Demon Hunter who took up the role in the years after the War of the Ancients. The retcon is absurd, so I have completely bypassed it, as it makes little sense and robs the night elves of one of the more interesting parts of their culture and tech tree. It is best to view the Legion lore as Illidan training -his- first batch of Demon Hunters, rather than the first ever batch of demon hunters to get trained.
  • The Barrow Deeps are considered to be in Winterspring, but somehow Illidan gets from those to Felwood in two days, and in WoW those Barrow Deeps do not exist. There are a number of theorised locations for the Barrow Deeps including Mount Hyjal. For consistency with WC3 lore I've kept it in Winterspring, but it might be worth considering moving it elsewhere.
  • Rage Winterchill dies when Archimonde is destroyed in Warcraft 3, but in the Battle of Mount Hyjal instance he dies on the assault on the Human Stronghold
  • Archimonde in WoW retains the same voice actor as he does in Warcraft 3. Theoretically, some of his lines from the Battle of Mount Hyjal and WoD's Hellfire Citadel dungeons could be used for new scenes.
  • Blizzard originally made an additional final mission set after Twilight of the Gods but it was cut as it felt like an anti-climatic slog that lasted for far too long. Though it is impossible to restore this final mission because we lack any knowledge of what it contained, nor the dialogue it had, it does reveal an interesting clue as to why the Chimera unit is not available in the campaign - it is highly likely that they were given to you in that final mission.

[POST CLAIMED IN CASE I NEED MORE]

Potential Avenues for Expansion:

Chapter 5 - Brothers in Blood

We know from the lore that there are other types of Druid in the setting, such as the snake-like Druids of the Fang, and that these also fought during the Third War at the Battle of Mount Hyjal but many died in the process. It might be worth adding a new area to this mission that deals with awakening the Druids of the Fang (or perhaps helping those that have already awakened) led by Naralax.

These could then serve as special campaign units for the last few missions (or possibly even just for this mission and on Mount Hyjal), and would serve as an introductory teaser to the Wailing Caverns in WoW.

Chapter 6x - The Last Guardian

This is currently a cutscene but it has potential to become an RPG mission, but why do it and what could it be about? Here are a few reasons why it is worth considering:

  • The Night Elf campaign is the shortest campaign after the Prologue, this would help address the balance a little bit.
  • The cutscene takes place on Mount Hyjal which is where the Chimera also live, this could give us the chance of using the Chimeras in this campaign. They were the only unit in the Night Elf roster that was left out of the Eternity's End campaign
  • It would give the Night Elves one more mission to fight against the Legion & the Scourge, further highlighting the threat posed by those two faction.
The why is easy, it's always easy to justify a new mission but what would it entail? That I do not know for certain. Personally, I would focus it on recruiting the Chimera to your cause, while avoiding Legion scouting parties, perhaps even clashing with the Alliance and Horde in the area. I do think it should be an RPG mission, or one with minimal base-building elements.

I mention this at the end of the first post, but the retcon makes absolutely no sense and is even broken by new lore added during Legion itself with the introduction of at least one character who was a Demon Huntress prior to WC3. Considering Demon Hunters are a core part of the WC3 Night Elf army list, and that this retcon is relatively poorly thought out, it is best to ignore it. Or rather, it's best to treat it as if the demon hunters are the first to be trained by Illidan himself (as he was imprisoned shortly after the War of the Ancients for 10,000 years), with others learning the arts in their own fashion as is insinuated in other parts of the lore.

I can get behind this. Do you suppose it'd be reasonable to have other Demon Hunters(s) to be in the campaign, then?

I'd say that depends upon execution, really. I'd love to see such things, but then I'm someone who would love to add a bunch of missions to the current campaigns. I imagine that there might be a way to show that he has support from other demon hunters, but its all down to how its executed.

I agree with the idea that demon hunters existed all this time in Kalimdor, hidden and ostracised, following the teachings of Illidan and awaiting his return.

By the way, I was wondering - what are your thoughts on why the dragons didn't participate in the Third War? I can understand the bronze not getting involved since all of this is part of the main timeline, and the blues are way too weak. But surely the green and reds should notice and fight against these undead?

I dug into this as deeply as I could without access to the novels, but from what I can tell, the excuse for why they weren't fighting is that the Dragon Aspects were all recovering from the battle against Deathwing and absorbing their old powers, but its a bit nonsense really. Even characters like Krasus, who lived in Dalaran, has no part in the Third War. His only recorded action is that after Kael'thas destroyed the corrupt Sunwell he gathered up the residual energy into the form of Anveena. That's it and there is a huge gaping hole in the story.

Funnily enough, there are tidbits of old lore that hint that they -may- have been involved in at least one battle. Early WoW (and in the RPG) the Red Dragonflight controlled Grim Batol, and we know that Magni Bronzebeard led the Ironforge Dwarfs north to the Wetlands where they fought a great battle against the Scourge that caused one of the Thandol Span bridges to collapse (retconned later in WoW). If we were to consider that as accurate still, then the red dragonflight may have fought against them in the Wetlands. Otherwise, they held no part in the story and no-one knows why. It would be nice to do something with them, even if it just involves Krasus.

The greens are a bit more complicated. In the mission to claim the Horn of Cenarius there was cut content that involved a green dragon called Tharifas, but no-one knows what purpose he had beyond that it involved a dragon roost and dragon whelps. Otherwise that is it. The green flight appear to have been dealing with issues in the Emerald Dream, but it seems absurd they didn't help either.

I guess it is possible that dragons fought alongside mortals in disguise. If any did, I expect the RPG would mention them.

What if we do add dragons getting involved here? Reds in Lordaeron, and both reds and greens in Kalimdor.

Ultimately it's up to InsaneMonster, I'm just here providing lore that might provide additional ideas for expanding the story or giving flavourful lore. However, I think unless a new campaign happened about Magni's involvement in the Third War we won't see the reds, unless Krasus gets added to any of the Dalaran content. With the greens there is the chance to create content about Tharifas, but otherwise I can't really see anything happening with the dragonflights

I imagine they would generally appear along the missions.

For example, creeps in the undead campaign, where they comment on how Arthas is defiling the sanctity of Life. In the night elf campaign, there could be recruitable green and red dragons, including Tharifas, and then more of them helping out during the missions.

I was wondering if perhaps there should also be druids who transform into cat form. They're simply part of the druids of the claw in WoW iirc, but perhaps you could create a new order known as the druids of the saber?

Either way, druids who use cat form should definitely appear.
