if i select a doodad and hold ctrl and then press page up and down it moves the doodad up and down. Ok if i copy that doodad and paste it elsewere it returns to its original height.
can i avoid that somehow? can i paste teh doodad at the same height?

I'm not aware of anyway you can do that, but what I do if I have got a lot of doodads and need to raise them is to just place a whole heap of them on the map (I do it somewhere off to the side, away from where you want to terrain). Then I just select all of them and raise them all together, then I can just move them where I want them.
