Questions regarding custom models in the _retail_ folder

So I have learnt something very interesting and was wondering if there are any experts out here that may have more experience with this than me.

To start this story, I have three major mods installed that modified my Warcraft 3 Folder (CSW, Re-Reforged & Age of Warcraft).

I was doing some tests regarding Waygates when I thought to myself, wouldn't it be funny if I changed the model of the waygate to another model in the CSW folder and it worked?
So, I typed the Folder link (like you would to a custom model you saved on a custom map) and the link worked.
Ran the game, saved and reloaded the World Editor and the model didn't turn into a green cube.
Tested it on AoW and RR models and they worked too.

So it got me thinking, and came up with two questions I want to ask veterans here.
1. Can I make my own folder full of custom assets and add it to the retail folder and have it work. (I say this because CSW, RR and AoW was done through installers)
2. Based on a previous question I had posted here where I found out that 4GB of Assets are too much for WE to handle and discovered that the upper limit of models for a map to launch is 3.5GB, If I use 4GB worth of assets in the retail folder and add them all to a single map, will WE kill itself and cause my PC to explode or work no problem?

I have a feeling that people who worked on the 3 mods can answer this easily and that I'm dumb for asking this and not noticing it sooner.
