hi!
to cut short, this "perspective project" is LegionTD UE, an unofficial expansion of VERY popular map,
as a short description, original map was created by lisk from clan TDG, but he officially stopped further development and left code open to public (link - http://www.legiontd.com/file/Legion150c - Editor's Version.w3x)
map is one of only few true original creations for WC3 (in my opinion, at least), and easily one of 10 most popular custom maps on bnet and garena. since last official release is about 9 months old, players are inpatient for a new version (including ourselves, we all teamed up in order to make map to PLAY it, not just develop)
LegionTD UE is spiritual successor to lisk's original, keeping the balance of original map as most important goal, while adding additional content at slow pace (but we added 3 races already, and fourth is on the way).
project is late beta phase (beta is open to public, can be found at:
http://jx3.net/tdg/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74&t=3930&sid=86d20cab5628479da7d9cede8d232497
first version will probably be issued very soon, after a months of development/balancing - so, it's unlikely that we give the whole thing up. first responses from community are very positive...
What do we need, then?
Well... Where to start?
1. a modeler. not exclusive one, anyone can contribute. this is both easy and complicated, also both good and bad, so let me explain.
bad: models should be low in size, ideally under 100kb.
good: not the highest quality is needed. typical LTDW player zooms out of normal view, to be able to see whole battlefield, so details aren't that important
bad: i'm not a modeler, so i may speak utter nonsense now.
good: if this idea ISN'T stupid, then it makes modeling easy. anyway - each race has 6 tiers of units, normal and upgrade (12 in total, sometimes more). so, upgrade might be pretty similar as normal unit, and differ only in tinting, size, missile type etc. that's the non-nonsense part
now, my questionable idea:
is it possible to, for example, make a model with large area tinted with team color, without head and weapon (those two would be replaced by attachments)?
this way, out of one model, we can get (another example):
- priest (normal head, staff),
- cleric (normal head/mace or other weapon similar to attach as staff),
- battle-cleric (whole head covered by helmet/another similar weapon, but more menacing)
- holy man (normal head, has halo attachment / no weapon, or some kind of glowing hands)
- corrupted priest (menacing black helmet, maybe dark halo instead / no weapon)
- chaos mage (no head, fire attachment instead / burning staff)
you get the point. 6 or more units out of one model. more with tinting/size. even more with fixed team color (teams rarely mix in LTDW, so this is an viable option). and all for ~200kb (presumably attachment would take additional space).
don't get me wrong, i saw perfect models ~500kb, but we simply cannot sacrifice that much, due to large number of custom units
you have a better idea for conserving space? wait no longer, pm me immediately!
bad: we would need a COUPLE of new custom models...
good: but not many... races are themed, but loosely. many existing models can be used "as is" (and some of them are already, with credits given), so you can modify your existing ones to fit our needs better (i imagine this doesn't require much work, but than again, i'm not a modeler), it will satisfy perfectly
good: your creativity is welcomed here! we don't have strict requests... but please tell us your idea first, just to be sure...
2. a texturer. again, anyone can contribute, preferably in cooperation with modeler
3. a triggerer. we have one already, but if you have good trigger already, why not contributing it? MUI is preferable, but ones without "every 0.03 seconds", since in LTDW often MANY units use triggers simultaneously, so i imagine this will cause lags...
4. an artist. of any kind. we want to improve overall look of the game.
5. other. you think you can help in ways other than above? feel free to apply!
our team currently consist of six people, altogether:
- lead programmer, currently on hiatus
- a group of balancers/beta testers (myself included)
- a triggerer
notice:
our lead programmer eGze is also maker of LTDW 2.X. this map, and 2.X are developed separately, but with shared resources (this is mainly because people like both flavors of game, old-school x1 and new x3, and generally don't mix much. for that reason we have two maps, one with x3-related options disabled, and other... well, you guessed)
a side notice:
2.x maps currently have bad reputation, reason is someone crack-opened map and found simple debug trigger left enabled by mistake. couple days before, eGze suffered major hardware and code loss, and was unable to fix it in time. anyway, i explained situation in more details in threads both on official and eGze's site, but if you want to believe someone dedicated 9 months of work just to be able to win in unfair manner, that's your thing. i have the UE open code, saw the "cheat" trigger - clearly marked and in plain sight - and i'm 100% sure it's just an unpleasant bug. why it's not fixed then? you may notice lead programmer is on hiatus, but our triggerer will fix it soon (i deleted this trigger immediately, problem is in disabled/changed x3 code).
feel free to pm me with applications, questions, comments - or whatever you like, even if you have a good joke to share...
and sorry for the language, not my native
