Noob Question - Would I Need Triggers For This Spell

Isn't Cleaving attack passive? If it is, then you could just give frost attack and cleaving attack to a unit and they should both activate when it attacks.

The lich never gets a frost attack just frost spells.

I don't think you can do this with out triggers because the cleaving attack is based on damage and just damage no other magic effects. So of course passive damage skills stack with it.

What you could do is maybe make a trigger that creates a dummy unit and casts a frost nova with no damage and the AOE of the cleaving attack every time the hero attacks. Then just give him a normal cleaving attack for him to learn.

Cleaving attack is a simple splash damage that works ONLY with melee attacks. With ranged you should simply add splash area on Attack Properties and use "missle (splash)" as attack type.
Frost attack needs "missle (splash)" attack type and a splash area or it will not work. That means that cant be used on melee attacks or normal missle attack that affects only 1 target (use frost orb for that).

To get a melee attack that does a frost attack witouth using triggers you can use missle (splash) attack type and a range of 100, take out the missle art and it will look fine. You cant use cleave attack but you can give a fixed splash damage on the attack (maybe can be increased with upgrades).
The problem is that you could have some problems with vampiric and trueshot aura that affect only melee and ranged attacks...
