Well the point of concept art is to create a completely different concept; idea. Concept artists in professional companies are the ones who come up with monster designs, dungeon designs etc(the graphical part at least), and modelers work off from the concept arts that the concept artists have made.

For example, Mr.Goblin has uploaded a few 'beast' concept arts on his deviantART profile here. You could see that none of them is anywhere near 'common', all of them are unique. That's pretty much the point, to come up with something unique.

Concept Art doesn't have to be revolutionary, but there has to be something unique about it, otherwise there isn't much need of it, is there? So yeah, there's a distinct difference between Fan Art (which is what I assume you've been working on judging by the post) and Concept Art. On the other hand, practising Fan Art is still practise - you'll develop a skill in art that is preferable to have when you work with concept art, because it will allow you to produce what you have in mind.

Good luck!
