Hmm, well I can't really call this a "story." Well it is but it isn't. This is more of a summary of events that describe both the Guardians and what their role is as well as the first wars of man. Erm let me explain.

I'm working on a story right now, building a world for starters, then finding a story to make with it. This first piece here isn't the beginning of the world, and it may not even be the present, at least where the story will take place, but it is an important area in the history of the world. This isn't the only piece of writing I have for my world either, it is just the one I am currently developing, so please forgive me if you are confused.

Basicly this is a summary of a point in time during the earlier stages of the world being inhabited by man. Was it ever inhabited by something else, possibly, could it be home to something other than man later on, maybe. Anyways, I'm hoping to continue to work on this as time goes on, continue to post my work and keep making updates on historical events and the such.

Anyways if anyone bothers to read this I appreciate it, and there will be more to come.

The ancient Guardians lived to protect the world around them, the natural world. They were much less worried about the beings of the world, than they were the world itself. The Guardians watched for hundreds of years, protecting all that was, and all that would be.

They drew power directly from the gods who had created them to protect their world. The Guardians stood as seven. At first their sole form was that of nature itself. The Guardians were said to have taken form as trees at first, trees which could rise up from the ground and move about. Later on they took on different forms. It was believed that one Guardian, referred to through history as Beriad, took the form of a butterfly and roamed the sky, watching over the world and reporting back to his fellow Guardians.

The Guardians survived through time before even the arrival of man. Once, however, man appeared on the world the Guardians had protected for so long, the Guardians became anxious. These new beings tore apart the world, taking the trees they had once loved and creating homes out of them and using them for many many more things. The Guardians sought help from the gods they had once followed without question, but received none. The gods simply told them to continue on protecting the world they knew, however they were strictly forbidden from interacting with the mortal man. The Guardians obeyed and returned deeper into the forest they had called home for so long.

Within the forest the Guardians once again took the form of trees, lying dormant in a constant state of meditation, vowing only to awaken when the world was in need of them once more. The need did arise, and much sooner than they would have believed.

Only five-hundred years after the arrival of man on the landmass the Guardians presided on, another group of men arrived. A major difference was seen in these new breeds however. The first arrivals were a simple people. They showed very little interest in war. They were simply there to live their lives and make due in this new world. This was the very reason the Guardians had not ignored the gods and destroyed the humans before they could cause further damage. These new men were different though, in so many ways.

The first Guardian awoke from his slumber and found a terrible sight. Areneth watched as great wooden vessels approached land. The vessels housed countless numbers of men, their skin a glistening coat of hard iron. They flowed out of the wooden boats like a swarm of insects, much greater in numbers were they to their earlier and simpler counterparts. The first people watched in awe as these armor bearing men entered into their world, bringing with them hard iron and ill intentions. Areneth watched as the new inhabitants, much like the first men, began tearing down forests in order to build their homes. Again they were simple wood structures, however these new men and their vaster technology gained a foothold much quicker than the first.

Areneth calmed slightly as the new men began to settle down much as the others had, but then blood was spilled. Areneth had never seen anything like it. It was much like how the native creatures would hunt their prey in order to survive, however Areneth could sense much different intentions. These men weren't killing in order to survive, but almost for the sport of it. The new men destroyed village after village, reaping havoc on the poor peasants. There cold unforgiving iron ripping clean through the peasants fur, leather, and wooden arms. Areneth quickly rushed to awaken the other Guardians who had slumbered through the arrival of the new men.

The Guardians suddenly found a new purpose, and knew now that it wasn't just the world who was in need of their power, but the men who had come in the early ages, those who had settle down within the world and payed respect in their own ways, men who were not vile and wicked like the men who now reigned supreme.

And thus the Guardians took on a new form. First was Areneth, who took the form of a tall and noble man, fair blond hair with a heavy beard to match. Eyes as green as the forest which could see miles and pick out the smallest details. His body portrayed strength and power as it was his duty to grant power to the ones in need. Beriad took the form of a young boy, nimble and quick like those he had witnessed in years past. His ageless youth was to portray the countless ages that had been spent protecting the world he knew, and how it seemed the world never seemed to grow a day older. The other Guardians took similar forms, either that of strong men or nimble youths, or even in between. One Guardian however took a different form. It had looked upon the men who had come and had not felt much. Those of the female gender were something different though. The Guardian known as Caran had seen the females as something much different from the men. They seemed so much more developed. He had felt that if they were dominant over the men that the world wouldn't have felt a single bit of pain, and that they could have lived amongst one another in peace and harmony. Caran took the form of a tall and beautiful women, her beauty unmatched by anyone. Her fair golden brown hair flowing from her head to her buttox. A glistening pair of blue eyes with hints of gold as bright as the clear sky. All men who would look upon her would feel at peace, and wish not for war but for love, and for a peaceful world where one could feel it without interruption.

The Guardians revealed themselves to the men and women of old. The broken and tired people looked upon the Guardians in awe and fear. They saw humans yes, but they all could feel the power kept within them. They could see it with their eyes and feel it in their souls. The guardians told the people stories of how they had seen the first arrival of man so many years before. They spoke of the new men as well and their plan to help rid the world of them.

With the help of the Guardians and their endless knowledge of the world and its workings, the men of old were able to gain the knowledge to forge iron. They to began donning suits of iron and wielding weapons of the same cold material used against them years before. Fifty years had passed while the Guardians prepared the men of old to face off against the invaders. Finally the time had come for the first battle to be waged.

Over the years of abuse that had occurred between the invaders and the men of old, the invaders had managed to push their enemies into the northern most portion of the continent. With this done they had free reign of the ripe southern territory, full of useful resources and wealth untold. The Guardians plan was to command an army of the northerners and invade the now southern land occupied by the invaders.

Horses had long been used for work on farms by the northerners, but never had they been used for battle, not even for hunting, but the Guardians insisted that they would prove most useful against the foot soldiers of the south, and so they did. The first battle to take place was on a snowy mountainside bordering the Forest of Eternal Slumber, where the Guardians had spent their time in meditation.

The southerners were greatly surprised to be met by men wielding iron, and with as much or even more proficiency that they had. The battle began as many had before, the southerners pushed the northerners back as they were battle hardened and more experienced, then came the cavalry. The northern soldiers mounted on horseback crushed the southern men with heavy iron pikes and heavy horse hooves. For once the south found themselves backing away.

Many more battles ensued, with victories for both sides, and the south even adapted the use of horses, evening the scales. At the battle at the Pool of Swirling Tides, the Guardians finally felt the urge to enter the battle field. Arming themselves in decorated iron armor, they marched side by side to their human counterparts and laid waste to the southern warriors. The guardians fought with the fury and hate built up against the southerners from so many years of their torturing the lands that they held so dear. They cut down grand numbers of men, but they themselves felt a heavy loss that they may never have recovered from. Areneth, the grand golden haired Guardian who was first to witness the arrival of the southerners, was captured.

A man by the name of Arne Fairchild, a tall stalky man with wiry black hair and a thin black beard, rode into battle with a second charge of men. He wore a set of black iron armor, resembling the color of the black panther which was his families crest, and wielded a grand iron sword, nearly as long as he was tall. He rode with his men, slashing out with his great sword and cutting down great numbers of northerners, whether they rode atop a horse or were on foot he cut them down. He had caught site of Areneth during his riding and noticed the decorated armor. Riding at full gallop he brought his heavy sword, flat first, into the side of Areneth's skull, his thin iron helm doing little to protect him from the impact. All around him his guard died and he was taken as a captive.

As a captive Areneth learned that even as a Guardian, in a human form he could do very little by way of his original power, and he believed that he may have lost it all together after spending so much time in such a form. Arne took Areneth and called a meeting with the commander of the northern army, who happened to be Caran or Gael as the people called her now. Arne, astonished that a women was leading the northern army, offered that all of the northerners be turned over as slaves for the return of their fellow Guardian. (Areneth had threatened his captors that they would face the wrath of the Guardians power, not only his but the others as well, and he had boasted of what they were and their duty.) Gael wished to accept but knew she could not. Arne was displeased and told Gael that Areneth would be executed if they did not change their mind.

Gael and the north chose battle. The north launched an all out assault on the village which the southern army had stationed themselves. The north fought hard, eliminating half of the southern army (4000 strong) but losing near as many (only 300 strong). The remaining Guardians rode into the village directly to where Arne was said to be. They witnessed a terrible event. Standing before a small wooden home was Arne, his great sword in hand, Areneth on his knees slumped over a wooden block. His hair was thick with mud and sweat and his once glorious golden beard was a dull brown and gray. He look his fellow Guardians in the face and muttered, "Protect them," just before Arne raised his sword and brought it down on the back of Areneth's neck, severing his head, and breaking the will of the Guardians.

Seeing a Guardian die brought immense sadness to the hearts of the other Guardians. They remembered the countless centuries they had spent together, living as one whole entity. They began to loath human kind, even the northerners they had sworn to protect, but they listened to Areneth's words, and vowed to protect the north and the men who lived in it.

Arne was captured by the Guardians and placed in a frosty prison in the far north where he would experience no amount of comfort. A new leader took up arms in the southern power, but he was of a different belief. He strived for peace with the north, and wished only to hold land in the south and let the northerners have theirs as well. The Guardians agreed to the terms, gaining a share of the southern land they had conquered.

The remaining Guardians turned then from their human friends, returning to the forest they had once slept in for hundreds of years. They remained in their human forms, but hid themselves within the trees. They vowed to the northerners that should the need arise, they would return to assist an win them their freedom and power much like they had in this age.

After this first age of war the North and South have remained separate and remain this way to keep the peace. People have attempted to gain power and enact a war like action but few manage to gain enough power to even hire their own guard, let alone muster the formation of an army, and thus the peace is kept, at least until another power rises up from the ashes that was the men of new or the Invaders.

A quick overview of characters in the Guardians section.

Guardians -
Areneth - Considered the eldest of the Guardians. There is never a set age ever placed upon the Guardians as they seem both ageless in that they can live forever, unless they die while in a physical form, and they can change their form to anything of any age. Areneth is considered the elder however because he seems to have a commanding presence over the others. He takes charge over the Northern armies along side human generals, while the others serve more as commanders under him. All Guardians are forever deemed equal, but Areneth still gains a sort of empowerment.

Caran (Gael) - The "Changed One" as refereed to by those who worship her. As they can change form, no Guardian has a specific sex, but in the case of Caran, his fascination with the females of the north pushed him to seek to be one, as he felt it would present more of his personal views. As Gael, Caran still held to his beliefs and strived for peace and not for the war that most men thirsted for, however when need be Gael would become as blood thirsty and vengeful as any man. A river was named after Gael, the River Gael, not long after the battle at the river took place between the north and south. Gael herself had presided over the battle in place of Areneth as he had remained with a larger force. The battle was decisive and Gael's forces suffered minimal losses.

Beriad (the boy) - Although Beriad had little to do with the wars that took place between the north and south, he was the main provider of knowledge on how to forge iron arms. After taking the form of a child, many grown men thought it silly to listen to him, even if he was a Guardian. Beriad proved them to be ignorant by showing them powers which he had developed as a Guardian, he was the only one to wield powers of magic. Beriad adopted the name, Father of Magic, or Son of Magic due to his youthful form. Beriad could perform acts of magic for example bending the elements, in fact the first piece of armor ever forged for the northerners was smelted by an intense heat conjured by Beriad in an open field, the Field f Flames. Beriad was the first Guardian to pass his powers on to a human. He took a young girl under his watchful eye and trained her in the arts of elemental magic. The girl was of a large family of northerners, the Valars.

Feredier - Closely related to Areneth in appearance. He stood close to Areneth throughout the wars providing his tactical mind as a useful tool during the war. Feredier often hunted for food to feed the armies while not commanding them. He trained many warriors in the art of stealth. As a Guardian before man, he had often taken the form of a panther and other predators of the wild of which stealth of essential. Feredier is still credited even today as being the one to make the use of rangers nearly essential in war and in everyday life. Another thing Feredier is credited for is being the only Guardian to mix his blood with a humans. He found that a women could be just as deadly as any other beast of the wild. A women of the Valar family (not the apprentice of Beriad), wooed Feredier and mixed her blood with his. The Valar family from then on boasted being of Guardian blood, and Feredier was bound to them as a protector.

Maethin - Much less renown than the other Guardians, Maethin in his young adult form, aging near seventeen, provided much less in way of war than the others did. In fact he provided no assistance during the war. He did fight in the battle when Areneth was taken, but otherwise he was not associated with it. What Maethin did excel at was the art of obtaining food. Maethin was great at farming and managing land, and equally as good at fairing the rivers and lakes for fish. Maethin was given the title, The Provider, as he provided the armies food in grand quantities.

Antien - A grand mountain of a man. When choosing his form he decided on a large frame with great mounds of head on both his head and face. He great brown beard and long thick hair was modeled after many northerners. Antien is often spoken of as being a man of great fun. He often joked with the men of the north and provided entertainment. He was a grand singer and even created the lute to play along with his voice. Antien inspired many northern men to take up the act of singing and playing instruments, in turn creating the first bards. Antien often sang of local events or people, and even songs of the wilds and the Guardians of old. Antien was also credited for fighting in the wars with no armor but to great battle axes which served as both weapons and massive shields.

Hebion (The Master of Wisdom) - Taking the form of a graying man, similar to Areneth again, Hebion proved to excel in most everything that all of the Guardians did. Hebion was an exceptional hunter, warrior, and could even perform magic. Hebion proved also to be greatly enthusiastic when given the opportunity to tell a story. He was simply erupting with knowledge of the ages and wished to spread it to any who wished to listen. Many listened, but few truly strived to follow every bit of information and keep it locked away in their minds. Hebion in turn created a new order, much like Feredier's rangers, Hebion's Grand Scholars or Keepers of the Words became reveared by all. They learned all they could from Hebion, even learning simple magic, and in turn kept the knowledge in books, scrolls, and spread it to others. Buildings were constructed in the villages where these Keepers lived and served them as Haven's to study other Keepers work, and to scribe their own.

Arne Fairchild of the Fairchild family - Arne was born to a lord from far across the western sea (no distinct name yet). He grew up training with his lord father's elite guard. Arne was a hard boy, even in his youth he showed little mercy or compassion, even to his sister who he beat nearly for her taking something of his without telling him. Arne soon became powerful under his father as the rightful heir to the Fairchild crown. His father, afraid of what could befall his kingdom, gave his son a time consuming task. He order his son to sail east across the sea in search of land. The continent of the Guardians was known to this great continent of lords and warriors where the Fairchild family lived, but the Guardians had never known that humans had sailed by their land in ages long since past. Arne, eager to call a whole continent his own, took to the sea with a grand mass of men and women, soldiers and civilians, to forge his own great kingdom.
The Fairchild family is called the first family for they were the first people to order colonization of the far off continent. Having their own kingdom in the Western lands (no name yet), they had power soon both their and this new world. Their family crest, the panther, was taken long before by Arnethun, a great warrior who was called the great panther as he stalked across the battlefield seemingly killing without even being noticed.

The Northern people were a very simple tribe of men and women of many different families who had traveled from the Western lands to the new world to escape the grand kingdoms. A simple people, they flocked to the new land for a new chance at a peaceful life.
