If the map is large enough and has distant regions, is it possible to change skies as the player camera moves along different areas of the map? And IF this is possible, is there a way to show at least a somewhat decent transition between the two skies?

If one can change the sky box model with triggers (I think one can?) then it is possible. Poll the player camera position and resolve which sky box is appropriate for it. Only problem is there would be no smooth transition.
Another question: what's the mapfile size limit to play multiplayer in WC3?
