Is there any way that you could "import" a model into your map, which doesn't really take up any file space but instead just emulates a model which is already in the MPQ?

For example, if I wanted to change the standard WC3 fire model to the standard WC3 smoke model, but I didn't want to import the whole smoke model file, I just wanted to "direct" the model to the path of the smoke model that already exists in the MPQ, how could I do that?

If you need a smoke instead of a fire, why don't you just create a smoke, instead of a fire with the smoke model?

I know... but my answer still applies.

Imports works with the filepath. You can replace a default model/skin with imported ones, but can't replace imported ones with Wc3 defaults since... they're already there, and there shouldn't be the need to import something to emulate them.

What if I want to change the buildingonfire model to the blue fire model, and I don't want to have to use up valuable map-size on that blue fire model?

I don't understand the "valuable map-size" thing

Seems like the building damage effects (fire) is hardcoded. probably changing the race from human to undead may change the HumanFire to UndeadFire or something.
