Hi my first post on this forum all tho ive been using this site alot and i always se hate filled comments on maps where they bitch and bitch about how they refuse to download maps over 3-4mb for some reason i dont understand why they would refuse unless they are on a 56k modem but well using common sense im gonna go ahead and say that sc2 maps will probly be twice the size of wc3 maps and what do people think about that? Well maybe not twice the size but more then now at least.

Im glad, i hate people who are so bothered about how big the map is, they could just delete the maps they dont use, or even better Dont play Wc3 or Sc2 on a laptop with no hard drive space.

I happen to be one of those people who would rather not DL a 3-4MB map. But that only applies to when I'm in a B.N lobby because of how long the map takes to DL without a bot. I doubt anyone really cares that much about the room a map takes on their harddrive. I had a 60 GB laptop and I didn't care.

Maybe I'm wrong, but if I recall right you can't play maps over 4mb on battle.net, which is the problem.

It's dependent on upload speed. A 200KB/s upload like I have makes the download go by very quickly (20 seconds for a 4MB map), but most people have 50KB/s or less (around 1.5 minutes or even higher). Unless you have a terrible download speed, the rate is capped by upload.

Blizzard servers, however, will be hosting some maps, a fact that will be very helpful for people unwilling to wait 30 seconds for a decent host to give them the map.

Likewise, about 200KB/s here as well. Even 1 megabyte maps used to easily take 1-2 minutes to download when WC3 was first released, but it's eight years later! With internet speeds at the point they are now, a 20 second download for 4 times the map size makes it trivial.

The main problem I see is not enough people set up their system to enable upload capability. If there's 12 players in a lobby and only the host can upload, it takes at least 3x times as long for everyone to get the map (compared to the situation of everyone can upload).

Something else! I hope blizzard is using torrent-like file transfer for SC2. In WC3, a person can only start uploading once they have the map 100% downloaded. It makes more sense for them to start uploading parts of the data as they receive it, like torrents do, becoming both a seeder and leecher.
