Is there a way to have a unit that must be manually targeted to be attacked?
There is an event that triggers when a unit auto aquires a unit.

Or make individual triggers per unit, and store them in a gamecache ++ detect when the unit dies. However, are you sure A Unit Acquires a Target doesn't fire on manual orders as well?So what, use jass to loop through all units and add it to them, yes leaking may be a trouble but hay it will work.
