I was thinking of giving every unit a item to show its current upgrade level. But I heard somewhere that items don't get removed properly. So my question is, what happens with items inside units on death?
You can specify in the Inventory Ability if the unit should drop items when dying.
Units have the unit inventory and heroes have the hero inventory as default. But there is nothing stopping you from giving a unit the hero inventory or creating your own custom inventory spell.
Just don't give non-hero units tomes. They crash the game.
