is there any good defrag programs

the one that comes with modern windows versions is rather bad and when i use it my harddrives lock up as well. is there any good ones that is free.

You could try AusLogics Disk Defrag. Also rearranges bits to salvage free space on your HDD. Pretty sure it's free.

IObit SmartDefrag is supposed to be alright too but I haven't tried it myself.

I prefer piriform's defraggler. I don't really know what the difference is between different defrag programs though, so if someone who knows more about it tells you otherwise, just listen to them

The one that comes with Windows 7 is perfectly fine. It defragments as much as necessary and further defragmentation will make very little difference. Fragmentation has little effect on modern game performance past initial loading as the data should be cached in memory from that point on.

Your hard disk locking up is a problem with your hard disk. I have used defragmenter on 4 Windows 7 computers and had no problem with hard disks during and after use. I can even play computer games while it defragments.

SSD read speed remains the same from the day they were purchased to the day they stop functioning.
SSD write speed can deteriorate to a degree from purchase as dirty blocks (blocks that have been previously written to) have to be cleared before another write can be performed on them. This basically is an extra step the hardware has to do for every write and so will slow write speed appropriately. Well designed SSD should perform block clearing passively in the background so no write operation should ever have to wait for a block to first be cleared.

i just tried the defrag program that is on my windows 7 pc and it cant even finish analyzing. the only use for an ssd harddrive is to run games that saves to the main harddrive. you have given me several suggestions but that doesnt help without a link to where i can find those programs. please update your posts with proper links.

If that is the case then your hard disk is defective and you will need to get a new one.

If you have a lot of files the analysis phase may take dozens of minutes. Even if it appears stuck at a number like 33% it is probably hard at work. The analyser employs dynamic performance to improve computer responsiveness so if you are using your HDD heavily it will throttle back its activity so as not to affect your program. If you are putting a HDD under heavy I/O strain then it may never be able to defragment it. My C drive typically takes 15-30 minutes to defragment but that is because I do it regularly.

andreasaspenberg, what I really want to know is how come you seem to be the only person in the world who has problems with everything computer related. Even Windows 7 defragmenter, a defragmenter that was rated the best for Windows 7 (all others had equal or worse I/O performance after defragmenting) gives you problems. Microsoft spent ages making sure that it would always work and some how you manage to break it.

Ummm ... I am with windows XP still, and the defrag I got is literally dull. When I start the defraging, it NEVER fully removes the red space(fragments)! I have to restart it like 2 or 3 extra times to clean up things better.

This tool is called O&O Defrag 2000 and is not only defragmenting files, but it also like tidy up the space lolz... I found on google that they even have commercial versions of this tool. Those versions can not only defrag lot better, but even have like auto-defrag feature, which is supposed to keep working files quidy and tidy or sumfen to not get defragmented.

It cannot reposition files that are opened for writing at the time of a defragmentation as it cannot get an exclusive lock of the file to make repositioning it atomic. As all log files used by the operating system or anti virus programs are always open for writing this cannot happen to them and they are the most prone to fragmentation. Files used by the operating system can also not be defragmented for security reasons.

You should not believe marketing garbage. Sure it may be better than XP's defragmenter but considering XP is over 10 years old that is not surprising. Windows 7 and 8 have far more advanced defragmenters.
