Imported sound files' size

You cam compress them using Audacity to 96 kbps, but it will reduce quality a bit and filesize.
Also, I don't really recommend importing lots of sound as it will increase your maps' size drastically. Unless the sounds are really short (like couple of seconds) and low file size.
Never upload wav, it's huge.

You need .wav format if you want to use the sound as a 3D sound, so if there is a sound effect that's really really needed (as in, no sound is a suitable replacement from the predefined sounds from warcraft III) then import it; as BloodDrunk said, it drastically increases map size.
