My guess is time, complexity and deadlines. We can attend to the minutiae at our leisure, but they were making a whole game and had to have it finished by a certain time. But it would be nice. How cool would be, for instance, if the Night Elves fit the tilesets completely? I know that Warcraft 2 had tileset variations with the buildings but those graphics are much simpler than 3.

Ok, sorry for the delay.

This should have be a basic 'replace texture reference in material layers' but I for some reason I encountered trouble. For some reason, the nodes changed and it wouldn't show up in the editor or in game. The bones defaulted to 0 for their values, particle emitters, collision box, object event and attachments disappeared. I tried recreating them by copying the values from the default model, but when I finished and imported, it crashed the map. (This isn't the first model I've had this issue with- the Frozen Throne destructible gate had this too)

I managed to get this, though. It has no particle effects or glow, but it is the model with the texture and works in game. (As far as my tests went- I encourage you to test it first in a new map rather than any existing projects)

Hopefully someone else can figure out this issue and give you exactly what you want.

Which part is the sides of the pylons? And could you elaborate on what you find flawed about it?

It looks very smudgy and does not really mesh with the texture on the sides of the pylons. Also all the straight lines make Blizzards poor UV work on the upper part very visible.
