How to retain color on minimap?

You could try swapping their colour as they type a chat message. If the event fires before the message is printed (I am not sure) then any colour change should affect it. You can then use a 0 timeout timer to change the player colour back. The message should still print in the desired colour but the player colour will appear to not change.

Be aware that it is generally a good idea for player colour and chat colour to be the same. This is to prevent confusion as to who is controlling what player.
