Try changing the global illumination model to on with many light sources from each direction (or if there is one to apply lighting uniformly to all geometry use that).
To illuminate the play field there is a global lighting model (one for day and one for night). You can use triggers to change this during the game. The shadows on cliffs may be caused by how the lighting works. Try changing the global light model to a different configuration to mask/not generate the shadows.
Neither am I, all I know is some people have done pretty impressive things by changing the lighting model and any form of automatic shadow generation is down to lighting.
