If you go to Scenario -> Map Options and check "Use Terrain Fog", then set the color to black and the Z Start to 0.00, the terrain will look darker.
Obviously this doesn't work if you already have a fog active.

Another option is to use Fade Filters: upload a black square (shouldn't be over 1kB) and then use the trigger:
  • Cinematic - Apply a filter over 0.00 seconds using Normal blending on texture BlackSqr.blp, starting with color (100.00%, 100.00%, 100.00%) and 100.00% transparency and ending with color (100.00%, 100.00%, 100.00%) and [TRANSPARENCY] transparency
The lower [TRANSPARENCY], the darker the map.

Another idea is to upload light sources, make them black and use them as doodads...

Why don't use unit instead of trigger?
Import the dummy.mdx model, then make a unit with the dummy model, set the scaling to 0.1, else to 0, attack enabled to none, move type to none, and then set up the shadow of the unit, also dont forget to make the collison size of the unit to 0, and it must have locust ability
It more easier than use trigger...
I know that the trigger would look better, but using the power of the object editor is also useful

Won't that be a lot of units you have to place if you've got a large terrain? ( + my third option is with the object editor).
