How do you edit the Alpha in the GIMP?

I've searched for this, but all that came up were about 50 useless threads that told me the same thing when I searched it on Google and such. Image>Image>something I don't know...

But no, I don't have those menu's. My Image doesn't have another Image submenu, or the menu/button after that.

That's why I'll ask how to edit the Alpha channel here.

What I mean:

Any images used to explain would be appreciated as I'm a complete and total noob at texturing/skinning.

First off you can make any area alpha by pressing i beleve crt+k
also the backround color needs to be wite for it to become alpha
and there are some color to aplha gimp fu scripts that can help
