Modeling Programs / Resources / Tools

Two methods of modeling are practiced by model authors:
  1. Model editing entails using an existing model and changing it.
  2. Scratch modeling is creating an entirely new model from nothing.
Doodads, spell, and ability effects models (SFX) are usually easier to create or edit than units or buildings.

Many freeware programs exist that allow aspiring modelers to learn and practice the craft. The two most vital and necessary tools are:Warcraft 3 MDL Tools by oinkerwinkle is an excellent place to start: download links and tutorials are available.

The Hive's 3D Modeling Tutorials provide a great deal of additional information about modeling and model editing.

you should gather information about all major 3d applications (3ds max, maya, lightwave, cinema 4d, softimage XSI, wings 3d, blender, milkshape, hexagon, modo etc etc) and find what suits you best. Many people agree though that lightwave would be the easiest to learn and maya & XSI the hardest, but it's up to you in the end.

Would you please link me to where I could find wings 3D?

That would be very helpful indeed.

Sansui and TDR: you guys know the modeling programs like the back of your skilled hands. I'd like to see our default modeling program list: 3D Modeling Tools: A must have! created by Chriz. undergo a substantial upgrade to make that post even more helpful to model editors.

Chriz.: will you consider reopening the sticky so that everyone can post links to an even wider variety of programs and tools? We could then go through them and add them to the original post to more fully answer questions like this.

Okay, unlocked and open, but nothing other than more programs and links will be allowed to be posted.

I'd say Blender is the hardest tool

only program fully compatible with wc3 is 3ds max 5 and 4.2. Other versions of 3ds max work only if you have Dex exporter (search for it on wc3c), but I don't know how well that works, and also I know that milkshape works too (RDZ uses it). Other than those, nothing is supported unless someone writes some exporters from them, but I doubt.
