Use variant B in my opinion and do the following stuff...

Use a repetitive trigger (Every 0.01 seconds) which is of course initially off. Turning it on must be made when you cast the knockback spell. Once you feel that the distance between the two units is high enough, just turn off the trigger from itself. Through GUI it is not multiinstance but atleast, it works!
