To give any unit a custom skin, you just change the skin's path to match that unit, but how do you change a custom unit's skin so that it has that of the Mountain King for example?

skins, models, and most all the object data can't be edited within the game i think.
I don't think this was the question...

As far as I know, you need to change the texture by editing the model itself.
In one of my progrems (I believe War3 Model Editor), I could change the texture of models... might be worth checkig out ^^

Allright, I've opened the program and noticed this:
  • Ask permission to change the texture of the model
  • Download/install War3 Model Editor
  • Run The program
  • Open the model you want (when permission is given).
  • Then go to "windows" -> "Texture Manager"
  • Right click the window and click on "import", import your texture and add it to the model.
  • Save the model and it should be done
(I did not test this, I just opened the program and followed the most logical steps).

If a modeller can answer this question, it would be a lot easier, of course :p I never create models/textures.

Edit:
I think you need to change the "Geoset Materials" to change the texture... not sure, though.

What's the reason of adding a default texture in a custom model? The texture applies in the edges of the model. You will end up making your custom model the default model, cause the edges should be displayed in the right way. If you place them in another model, the shadows of the texture will not be displayed on the edges of the model (where they should be), so, you should make the edges suit the texture = the default model :S

You're right, and the shape of the custom model I'm using is indeed the same as the original so that the skin fits the polygons correctly. However I'm using the custom unit because it has many animations that I need, and that the original unit does not have.

I managed to get the texture on correctly, and although the model appears the same the geosets are different, and so the parts of the unit that display "team color" are different from the original's. Any ideas?

If you just wish to edit animations, you can do that with the program I've given you as well.
Instead of changing the texture, just change the animations ^^

(I don't have any idea about the texture-problem, I'm not used to those kind of things :s)

How do you export animations with the Magos editor? The manual doesn't say and it doesn't seem possible. Some animations work in one of the models but not the other because they have different bone structures and geosets.

Nevermind, I fixed the team color problem by messing around with the skin's alpha channel.
