This isn't a post about terraining. Well, it is. I saw these and terraining was the first thing that popped into my mind, and thought if I still had the time I'd love to make some of these in the Editor.

Maybe someone else will feel inspired by them!

They're winning shots from the IAPLC (International Aquatic Plant Layout Competition) which is about as close to a real-life terraining contest as you can get. Instead of a 256x256 WC3 map, however, participants place objects in a similarly-shaped aquarium.

It's so interesting to me that the use of camera angles, perspective, lighting, and object placement are so similar to what we do here.

We should all invest in aquatic landscaping and start a new forum.

What came to mind for me was to do a terrain of Noah's Ark, but from under water. Basically make a landscape and add sea-life and proper lighting and whateverelse.

Edit: I should say, I used to own 2 fish tanks. Wayyyyyy too much work. They are long gone.

- I've got a terrarium, though, if that counts :)
 Yes, and what do you keep in it?

I have got 12 tanks running presently. 4 planted large ones and other small ones I keep for breeding fish and shrimps. Also, proud member of my local Aquarist Society since the past 6 years!

My first hobby is aquaculture and I was also inclined to make similar terrains sometime ago but the idea never became because I in my opinion we can never make a realistic water surface. I did try to make one by inverting the water doodad but the result was horrible!

How did you come across these? Are you also into fish tanks?
I personally never liked these uber fish tanks with all that aquscaping because they don't last and are only created as show tanks. Costing a bomb just to keep them the way they look. A waste of nature! Not to mention, only someone with a lot of time and money can maintain them.

No although if I had enough money I could see myself trying something like this. It's way too expensive for me, I'm afraid, and it doesn't work so well in a tiny city apartment :(

I found these on an art blog I frequent http://www.thisiscolossal.com/

oh!
This hobby is indeed very expensive. Money hampers creative pursuit.
I breed fish for local clubs, its a part time business but it is a exhausting job.
If I do find a better job I will sell out and move on.

On a side note, just like in w3 terraining complex objects are created from separate smaller pieces.
Compare the trees with doodad golems and ilk.
+1
Also light sources are sometimes used to make moodiness and some folks also use sky backgrounds, like sky boxes. Similarities are too many, perhaps a terrainer can also be a good aqua scaper and vice versa.
