English is definatly screwed up....

Every language has that. Here is a couple of examples:

The words for pigeon and dove are the same in dutch
Lesbian is the same as oil rig in dutch
There are four different gender forms for Gedelic

The list goes on and on. To say that just one language is odd is to make a very large understatement, about the same as saying there is a little bit of water in the ocean.

If the suffix -arian meant "eater," then a humanitarian would eat humanity (not humans, as I'm sure you were thinking). However, it does not mean "eater," so you cannot make that analogy. A person is called a vegetarian because of his beliefs, not his diet.

Aye, plus that is a latin\greco word, not english. Keep with the subject. Can anybody else think of such odditites in their native languages?
