The burning footprints are spawned objects which are emitted by the model itself. You can use War3 Model Editor to add them to any model.

You don't need to know the path; you need a four-letter code that all event objects have (normal footprints, death sounds, blood splats and uber splats). Just open the Illidan model in the Model Editor and copy the code from the Node Manager.
