Damage Shield!

I was wondering if it is possible to have a shield (ie: mana shield) that does not show up when the unit is not under attack but it flares when the unit gets attacked, indicating the attack was absorbed. If so, how would I do this? (like the protoss shields in sc2 )

and make sure you dont show any buff aka the mana shield orb around the hero, make sure all affects are triggered.
