Aftershocks have seized for now.
New Zealand South Island Quake - 5 September 2010 Report (by Me)
New Zealand (NZ) was hit by a 7.1 magnitude quake at 4 September 4:35 am, 30-40km west of Christchurch (ChCh). This caused power outages and major destruction in central ChCh. A state of emergency has been declared here. Aftershocks occur very frequently, but are usually very small.
Strangely, no-one has been confirmed dead, but two major injuries have been reported. Many more minor injuries reported.
More damage can be caused by gales coming tonight. Many buildings heavily damaged, estimated to be in the 500's range, most of which are historical.
