IMO, when making a multiplayer orpg don't bother with a good storyline, rich backgrounds and such. People only care about getting epic items and getting them fast.
That's why i prefer Single Player rpg's =^.^=

I will add though that most people prefer to play with other people so making it multiplayer will make it alot more popular.

Agree with Gray_Fox

ORPG's are for the ones who want to brag about how strong their equipment is and while SPRPG's are for RPG's which includes Stories and such.

I prefer ORPG though cause it can be played a lot of time while SPRPG's are a one shot gameplay.

I must say i agree with all of those above saying that people prefer to play with multiplayer because of the social interaction and i would rather play a multiplayer game then a single player... UNLESS, every NPC is able to be interacted with and talked with. This would require some triggering to be done but this would allow for a richer story line and more in depth game experience for the player. Personally, I prefer that RPG's that i play have a good story line to them. But if you don't intend spending the time on making the map more social towards the player, then I would suggest making it multiplayer.

EDIT---> Also if you are having trouble with the story line, I suggest you talk to Newbchu, he is great at creating story lines for any map.
here is the link to his story line "workshop"
