post a screenie of the drop down menu in which the sent items can be selected... so that we can see that it really doesn't exist for you...

Make sure Save a copy of sent messages in my Sent Items folder by default is ticked.

Why is this not ticked by default anyway? Until you discover the option, messages have been lost.

That's standard behavior in vBulletin. But that's no excuse..
