GhostThruster: while this icon is more interesting than your base shield icon, the crack is done poorly. as others have pointed out, the whole thing looks flat and like you drew black lines over your original icon (which is probably what you did do). instead, you should aim to define the form of the shield at its cracked part, as ardenian suggested.

The crack is in the layer over the shield, not within the shield, so it looks like e.g. a black thunder.
To avoid this you could add three dimensionality to the shield borders next to the crack.

You basically have the choice between two ways:
Either a scratch crack, like this:

Or what you aimed for, a full crack. Keep in mind there is structure, not random pixels:

Hm, now I know what felt strange, the glow stops immediatly at the cracks. Shouldn't it at least fade somehow ?
