You should try to center the skull and make it take up all of the icon, that way it'll be easier to recognise.
 
Make the glow coming from the skull grey, light blue, or something like that, so it doesn't blend in with the background. You also need to make the teeth more defined so that they can actually be seen in the icon when it is reduced to the normal size of an icon. The full size image looks very cool, it's just that most of the details in it are too fine to be seen when it is scaled down.

Keep the same colour as the background because it is supposed to be the continuity of the light coming out of the skull but make the light stronger (Strongest light -- White => yellow => green => blue -- Weakest light) in the eyes, nose, mouth. Also DEFINE VERY CLEARLY (and this is the most important thing that you should do) every part of the skull with the glow.

Right now it is nearly impossible to know what is going on in the 64x64 without the full size image and it took me a few seconds to see the skull in full size.
